A cat and composer cause classical consternation
in
A Night of Rhythm and Mews
by Fox and Marshall.
From where does a composer find inspiration?
In the case of Percy Nightingale, it’s the arrival of a rather special cat that points the way. Percy discovers the rhythm, Bruno brings the mews. Together they create a musical extravaganza for a concert like no other.
40 years ago, a young art teacher, A Fox, began to paint a sequence of watercolours about a musical cat to entertain her little daughter who was already fond of music. From 40 resulting pictures, A Night of Rhythm and Mews slowly grew and eventually her husband was roped in to provide the captions. Development was considerably fuelled by the antics of their characterful cat, not to mention wry sideways glances at the world of classical music. Enter the mega-maestro conductor, the most critical of critics, the men who hold the money, not to mention a whole troupe of absolute orchestral beginners.
Over the years these ingredients slowly coalesced into this unusual little book, illustrated with character, observation and humour.
Fox and Marshall value their privacy but have finally agreed that their family entertainment should now be made available more widely in the hope of encouraging a greater appreciation of orchestral music amongst the young.
